A surprising discovery found that quantum dots from tea extracts could inhibit the growth of lung cancer cells.
May 31, 2018

An international team mixed tea extracts and compounds to produce organic quantum dots, which proved that these quantum dots were cheaper, simpler and less toxic side effects. The more surprising surprise was that the quantum dots also inhibited the growth of lung cancer cells in the experiment. The quantum dot is a very small nanoparticle (with a width of less than 10 nanometers), only 1/4000 of the human hair's width. Because of its special optical characteristics, it has a wide commercial application, from sensor, solar cell, television to cell phone charger, even in the medical field. Its fluorescent properties can help doctors accurately "illuminate" tumors.

Grean tea extract.jpgThe problem is that the process of producing quantum dots is not so good, such as a colloidal solution synthesis (colloidal synthesis), which is often made up of dangerous biochemical substances. But a new international team study, made up of Swansea University and the K. S. Rangasamy Institute of technology in India, shows that we can make quantum dots by using abandoned tea leaves, and the process is more nontoxic and simple. The known tea contains a variety of compounds, including polyphenols, amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants. Scientists are now mixing tea extracts with cadmium sulfate (CdSO4) and sodium sulfide (Na2S) to produce cadmium quantum dots; then researchers applied quantum dots to lung cancer cells to test them to "illuminate" the tumor. How the effect is.

The team quickly found that the quantum dots produced from the tea extract could be a nontoxic substitute for the quantum dots made by chemicals, both of which had the same excellent fluorescence properties; however, the most surprising team was that they did not expect these quantum dots to inhibit the growth of lung cancer cells, because the quantum dots infiltrated into cancer. In cell nanopores, 80% cancer cells die.

Making quantum dots from tea extracts is a simpler, cheaper, less toxic way to make quantum dots from tea extracts. "BBC" reports that the cost of chemical synthesis of quantum dots falls at 250~500 pounds per microgram, but the cost of organic quantum dots is only 10 pounds per microgram, and it also accidentally concurrently inhibits cancer. The function of cells is not used to worry about toxic cells in the medical field.

Lung cancer is one of the most surviving diseases in common cancers. Although new organic quantum dots are currently only inhibiting cancer cells in laboratory Petri dishes, it may take years for real commercial applications, but the team is actively looking for an enzyme that can deliver quantum dots to living cancer, if everything goes well, Human clinical trials can be carried out in about 2 years, and maybe in 10 years we can get a completely new treatment.
